Abbado's new, revised edition of the Beethoven symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic

Here is the new complete edition of Claudia Abbado's Beethoven Symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic. Nos. 1 -8, previously released only on DVD, were recorded live in Rome in 2001, while No. 9 is Abbado's re-edited version of the earlier recording from Berlin. Containing the maestro's final interpretative wishes, this new cycle replaces his Berlin set issued by Deutsche Grammophon in 2000 - now no longer available.

Claudio Abbado comments "There are many reasons for releasing this new edition, above all musical ones. After many performances of the cycle, our interpretative vision had matured, becoming more natural and shared. The concerts in Rome marked significant advances in terms of style, spirit and technique."

Review: "Claudio Abbado recorded a complete Beethoven symphony cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2000 in Berlin. For all its fast tempi and crisp articulation, much of it struck me as rather grey and lifeless. There were some good points - fine accounts of symphonies 1, 2, 4 and 9 in particular - but overall it was disappointing. This 'new' set was mostly recorded just one year later, taken from live performances in Rome, but with the earlier Berlin account of the ninth retained.

Abbado's interpretations seem to have evolved rather a lot in such a short space of time. Tempi are still brisk, but Abbado now gives the music room to breath. In the sleeve notes, the conductor talks about developing more of a shared view with his orchestra. That's readily apparent in the performances. Where before we had an orchestra playing all the notes very proficiently, now there's much more of a sense of an ensemble making music together.

What distinguishes this set from almost every other complete cycle is its remarkable consistency. There isn't a single disappointment amongst the nine. The style is very much in keeping with the current mainstream - played on modern instruments but with transparent textures and lively tempi. Abbado reveals details without expressive point-making, and allows the music to unfold naturally.

There are, of course, many great accounts of individual symphonies by other artists. But if you are looking for a complete cycle by one orchestra and conductor, Abbado's has to be one of the top recommendations.

Pierre Boulez (French pronunciation: [pjɛʁ buˈlɛz]) (born March 26, 1925) is a French composer of contemporary classical music and a conductor.
Boulez was born in Montbrison, Loire, France. As a child he began piano lessons and demonstrated aptitude in both music and mathematics. He pursued the latter at Lyon before pursuing music at the Paris Conservatoire under Olivier Messiaen and the wife of Arthur Honegger, Andrée Vaurabourg. It was through Messiaen that he discovered twelve-tone technique — which he would later study privately with René Leibowitz — and went on to write atonal music in a post-Webernian serial style. Boulez was initially part of a cadre of early supporters of Leibowitz, but due to an altercation with Leibowitz, their relations turned divisive, as Boulez spent much of his career promoting the music of Messiaen instead. The first fruits of this were his cantatas Le visage nuptial and Le soleil des eaux for female voices and orchestra, both composed in the late 1940s and revised several times since, as well as the Second Piano Sonata of 1948, a well-received 32-minute work that Boulez composed at the age of 23. Thereafter, Boulez was influenced by Messiaen's research to extend twelve-tone technique beyond the realm of pitch organization, serialising durations, dynamics, mode of attack, and so on. This technique became known as integral serialism. Boulez quickly became one of the philosophical leaders of the post-war movement in the arts towards greater abstraction and experimentation. Many composers of Boulez's generation taught at the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt, Germany. The so-called Darmstadt School composers were instrumental in creating a style that, for a time, existed as an antidote to music of nationalist fervor; an international, even cosmopolitan style, a style that could not be 'co-opted' as propaganda in the way that the Nazis used, for example, the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. Boulez was in contact with many young composers who would become influential, including John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. (Wiki)

The New Year Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic (in German: Das Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker) is a concert of classical music that takes place each year in the morning of January 1 in Vienna, Austria. It is broadcast around the world to an estimated audience of 50 million in 72 countries.

The Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert 2010 was conducted for the second time by the French conductor Georges Pretre. Due to the television and radio broadcasts in more than 70 countries, the New Year's Concert is in terms of its international coverage the largest classical music event in the world.
