Sergei Prokofiev - 50th Anniversary Edition (2003) [Box set, 24 CDs]

Sergei Prokofiev was born in the Ukraine, and by his early teens he was an accomplished pianist and already composing works such as the "Scythian Suite". From this and other works it initially looked as though the young composer had modernist tendencies. During these precocious years, he was naturally rebellious and delighted in mocking and shocking authority figures or anyone who held traditionalist views. Perhaps this was something of an act or "a phase he was going through" because it became apparent that, for all the novelties introduced in his style, Prokofiev was at heart a traditional classical composer. He largely stuck to established musical conventions, though elaborating upon them and introducing influences from other composers, from folk music and ideas absorbed during his travels abroad. Some of his influences came from the old Russian school of Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov, but he also took on board the fresh ideas from Stravinsky, from Western composers and from his own instinctive talent for thematic development and sense of movement and drama.

peter and the wolf CD cover Prokofiev travelled to Japan, to the United States, and to the European capitals of London and Paris. These travels gave him opportunities to learn new ideas, but also to demonstrate his talents to new audiences. He met Stravinsky, and worked on a number of ideas for ballet material for Diaghilev. He eventually settled in the West and remained there for some 15 years where he relished the artistic freedom and stimulation, and he produced a number of major works during this time. Film music was in its formative years at this time, and Prokofiev was quick to realise its potential, even visiting Hollywood at one time. However after some visits to the USSR, he decided to return to his friends and home country. He therefore became subject to the same state-defined restrictions as Shostakovich and other artists. Like the younger composer he also stepped over the mark on occasion and was branded a "formalist" before apologies and conformist material re-established a secure position, though he was never able to fully express himself under these conditions. Ironically he died on the same day as Stalin.

The First Concerto can live or die by its own parody. Overplay it, and it's about as funny as bad slapstick, treat it straight and it's mesmerising in its black humour, always within a hair's-breadth of crossing the line into sheer insanity. Dmitri Alexeev is a gruff but never harsh soloist, the trumpet-playing of Philip Jones apparently effortless, the ECO sounding anything but English (a tribute to their conductor). The Second Concerto is, on the surface at least, a far more amiable animal, though with Shostakovich things are never quite as simple as they seem. The second movement contains one of his best melodies, a veritable love-song, which Alexeev plays simply and affectingly. As a bonus, you get the Assault On Beautiful Gorky. Written for a patriotic film, it's a stylistic flashback to the romanticism of Tchaikovsky and Miaskovsky. While these versions of the two Shostakovich piano concertos fall a shade short of the exuberance and sheer brio of their full price Hyperion counterpart they are much better than just creditable. A fixture of the budget catalogue since their appearance on Classics for Pleasure LP in the early 1980s they are well recorded and sprightly. The hoarsely urgent edge given to the French horns lodges in the memory. Alexeev is not, on this occasion, quite the magician that Marc-Andre Hamelin is on Hyperion CDA6742 but he has the necessary reserves of impudent humour and outright romance to make the two concertos sing. He is however more successful in the romantic stuff in the Second Concerto than Hamelin. If on the other hand you are not allergic to a rather grainy and close sound then do not miss the Hall of Fame version of the Second Concerto from Bernstein (conductor and pianist) on Sony. Alexeev’s sympathy for the romantic vein stands him in good stead in the swooning Tchaikovskianisms of The Assault on Beautiful Gorky; not otherwise widely available.

Jamiroquai - Live at Montreux 2003 is a DVD of a concert performed by the British band Jamiroquai at the 2003 Montreux Jazz Festival. The DVD was released on October 1 2007 through Eagle Vision, a distributor also related to other DVD releases of Montreux Jazz Fest. performances. While the concert has been documented (bootlegged) in whole by fans, and has received a rather large amount of notability among the same fandom, it is the first time for this concert to see a professionally made, official DVD release. While the DVD will feature all of the tracks from the festival (including the among-fans notorious "Shoot the Moon"), it will also feature a '12-minute' live version of Space Cowboy, recorded at the same jazz festival, albeit in 1995.

Most of this concert's songs are "extended", a prime example being "Travelling Without Moving", which lasts for only 3 minutes and 40 seconds on the album, and circa 12 minutes on this live recording. Such "extended" performances are not uncommon to the band's live side.
